The 00's: The Takeover of Juicy Couture

Juicy Couture took off by storm in the 2000s with socialites such as Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Britney Spears, and Kim Kardashian hitting the streets in their Juicy Couture tracksuits. The Juicy Couture tracksuit has been as solidified a pivotal staple of 2000’s (Y2K) fashion. The phenomenon began with their release in 2001, and they soon took off with their appeal of being both luxurious and comfy, as well as providing a flattering silhouette. Nonetheless, socialite Paris Hilton was largely responsible for their surge in popularity. Juicy Couture has always been linked to Paris, mostly because of the tabloid culture that surrounded her at the time, which included pictures of her wearing the tracksuit at unscripted moments in various places. Juicy Couture is deeply ingrained in Y2K fashion, to

the point where the brand has now had a resurgence in the 2020s. For instance, popular high street retailers such as Urban Outfitters begun selling a range of new Juicy Couture tracksuits in a whole range of appealing colours. The 2020 updated tracksuits, on the other hand, are not like the original 2000 tracksuits; they have a diamonte logo on the back, which has generated some debate among those who favour the original Juicy.

How to incorporate Juicy Couture and the comeback of Y2K fashion into your wardrobe today.

If you want to embrace the Juicy Couture Y2K fashion sported by Paris and Kim in the 2000's, here is a few ways you can go about it:

Accessorise: Having the right accessories is essential to achieving the Y2K look. Consider chunky jewellery, statement sunglasses, and handbags with charms or rhinestones. Accessory layering gives your ensemble depth and helps achieve the Y2K look.

Mix it up: Tracksuits from Juicy Couture are adaptable as you can wear the full fit or mix and match the top and bottom with other attire.  For example, wearing the Juicy hoodie with high-waisted jeans could achieve a casual yet fashionable look that evokes elements of Y2K nostalgia.

Baby tees & cropped t-shirts: In the early 2000s, baby tees were a must-have item for any closet. For a throwback Y2K look, team them with a miniskirt or low-rise jeans. To further accentuate the Y2K aesthetic find a baby tee with rhinestone or sequin detailing.

The 10's: The Emergence of Hype Beast Culture

‘Hypebeast’ culture began in the 2010’s as a term to describe an individual who eats, sleeps, breathes fashion and invests in the costliest streetwear brands on the market. This term rose in popularity throughout the 2010’s, with streetwear brands such as Supreme, Stussy, Off-White and more being labelled as it. By attaching the term ‘hype beast’ to these brands it facilitated the need of streetwear fashion enthusiasts to keep up with the latest releases from these hyped brands. The logo is a crucial component of this streetwear look, usually designed to be purposely bold so that customers can show off their latest purchase.

For many fans of these sensationalised streetwear labels, if the logo isn't large and obvious, it's obvious that no one can see it, so what's the point? Because of the "hypebeast" mentality,

a lot of streetwear fans are competitive and always trying to get their hands on the newest or limited edition things. Moreover, many of these individuals acquire the latest streetwear trends and then discontinue wearing  them once the initial thrill fades, it may have a startling effect on our environment. Although, many of the 'hype beast' brands are becoming available on 2nd hand retailers, which allows for a more ethical consumption.

How to incorporate 'Hype Beast' streetwear into your wardrobe:

'Hype beast' clothing frequently has vibrant graphics and bold logos on hoodies and T-shirts. Additionally, a major component of this look is its emphasis on designer sneakers. Many people into 'hype beast' clothing have a deep interest in collecting trainers from brands such as Nike and Bape. Nevertheless, this fashion may be quite costly, since the brands linked with it typically cost £100 or more. However, there is ways to get past this by shopping these brands from 2nd hand retailers such as Vinted and Depop.

Here are a few ways you can style 'hype beast' streetwear.

Jeans or Cargos with a Graphic Tee: Wear a relaxed pair of joggers, cargos or baggy jeans with a graphic t-shirt that has a striking pattern or logo from a well-known streetwear brand.

Matching Trainers with your outfit: Invest in a matching set consisting of a hoodie and sweatpants featuring coordinating prints or colors. Pair it with some Nike Jordans that fit the colour palette of your outfit!

It's been stated that fashion trends repeat themselves every 20 years, and the baggy 90s look is clearly back in style and if anything it's come back baggier. The 2020's have experienced a resurface of baggy clothing with retailers purposely manufacturing baggy styled clothing from oversized t-shirts and sweatshirts to parachute pants, cargos and denim jeans. The movement towards with baggy proportions and wider silhouettes within streetwear fashion is most likely down to how it  allows you to feel confident yet comfy. It can feel quite liberating to completely alter your silhouette. In essence, baggy clothing has a sense of gender fluidity with the silhouette appearing more gender neutral, it helps transcend gender barriers and enables people to express themselves in ways that go beyond societal standards.

How to incorporate baggy streetwear into your wardrobe:

Here are a few ways you can style baggy streetwear:

Parachute pants/baggy jeans with a baby tee: Balancing the baggy and more wider pieces of clothing with something more tight fitting on the top can help even out the proportions of your silhouette.

Commit to the oversized silhouette: No need to always balance out the proportions, you can build an oversized/baggy silhouette by pairing baggy trousers with an oversized hoodie. Get experimental with your proportions.

Chunky Sneakers: Chunky sneakers/trainers can help balance out the baggy silhouette of your look. Their unconventional shape helps add visual interest to the outfit, as well as giving it a bit of edge.
